A family album

About this part of the exhibition

This section of the exhibition traces resemblances through generations of one family. The photos are all taken from the family album of Harry and Ruth.

Family albums are rich resources full of resources. Pictures are usually put in date order which can make resemblances that occur over time difficult to spot, because likenesses between people in different generations are sometimes strongest when those people were the same age.

It is interesting to ask ourselves how much photographs can tell us about resemblances and family connections. What else do we need to know about the family and their lives to understand the relationships? If we can see a strong resemblance between family members, what do we think that means. Usually there are stories in families, and sometimes arguments, about who resembles who and what it means!
